Graphic Design Process – Midnight Echo (Concept Brand)
1. Project Purpose
The Midnight Echo brand was created as a theoretical branding exercise to explore the visual identity of a rock-and-roll music brand. The goal was to design a brand that captures the raw energy, nostalgia, and authenticity of classic rock culture while still feeling modern enough to work across digital platforms, merchandise, and promotional material.
This project allowed me to experiment with branding strategy, typography, layout systems, and brand consistency** without the constraints of a real client.
2. Research & Concept Development
Before designing, I explored the visual culture of rock music and the aesthetics commonly associated with classic rock eras.
Key visual themes I identified included:
- Vintage microphones and stage equipment
- High-contrast black and white imagery
- Concert environments and stage lighting
- Raw, gritty textures and glitch effects
- Bold typography with handwritten elements
From this research I defined the brand personality as:
- Authentic
- Energetic
- Vintage inspired
- Raw and expressive
The name Midnight Echo was chosen because it evokes the feeling of late-night live music, sound reverberating through venues, and the timeless echo of classic rock.
3. Logo Design
The logo combines two important elements:
Symbol:
A vintage microphone illustration represents live music, performance, and the roots of rock culture.
Wordmark:
The handwritten script creates a personal, expressive feeling, mimicking the spontaneity and emotion of live music.Together the symbol and script give the brand a retro yet artistic identity that feels authentic to the genre.
4. Typography
Two complementary fonts were selected to create hierarchy and contrast.
Brittany (Script Font)
Used for the brand name to introduce personality and artistic flair.
League Spartan (Sans Serif)
Used for headings and structured content to provide clarity, strength, and readability.
This contrast between expressive script and bold sans-serif reflects the balance between creative music culture and professional event promotion.
5. Colour Palette
The brand uses a monochrome palette:
#000000 | #545454 | #737373 | #a6a6a6 | #d9d9d9
The decision to keep the palette **black and white** was intentional.
Reasons:
- Reflects classic rock photography and album covers
- Keeps the identity **timeless and bold**
- Allows imagery and typography to dominate
- Works well across merchandise and print.
Accent colours such as gold or yellow can be introduced for highlights in promotional material.
6. Visual Language & Mood Board
To establish a consistent visual direction, I created a mood board including:
- Concert crowds
- Electric guitars
- Vinyl records
- Rock hand gestures
- Street musicians
These visuals help define the tone and atmosphere of the brand: energetic, gritty, and authentic.
7. Application & Brand Assets
Once the core identity was established, I explored how the brand could function across different mediums.
Promotional Design
Posters and social media graphics were created to simulate live music event promotion.
The layouts use:
- Strong vertical composition
- Layered photography
- High contrast lighting
- Graphic accents such as dots and lines to mimic stage lights
Merchandise
The identity was applied to:
- T-shirts
- Phone cases
- Skateboard graphics
- Tickets
Testing the brand across merchandise helps evaluate whether the identity is versatile and scalable.
8. Final Outcome
The Midnight Echo project successfully demonstrates how a brand identity can be developed from concept to application.
Through this project I explored:
- Brand storytelling
- Typography pairing
- Monochrome identity systems
- Promotional layout design
- Merchandise applications
Although the brand is theoretical, the process reflects how a real brand identity would be developed for a music-focused company or event promoter.
