Royal Bafokeng Institute — Brand Identity Refresh
Overview
As part of my role at PageFound, I worked on refining and extending the Royal Bafokeng Institute’s brand identity. The objective was to modernise the visual system while maintaining strong brand recognition and aligning the identity with RBI’s role in education and community development.
The Challenge
The existing identity had strong foundational elements but lacked consistency and flexibility across different platforms. The challenge was to create a cohesive, scalable system that could function seamlessly across print, digital, environmental design, and branded merchandise—while still respecting the integrity of the original brand.
Approach
I followed a strategic, system-driven design approach focused on clarity, consistency, and usability.
The process began with a deep dive into the brand’s purpose, audience, and existing visual language. From there, I refined the logo and expanded it into a flexible identity system, ensuring it could adapt across various applications without losing its impact.
A key focus was building a unified visual language. By extracting and developing graphic elements from the logo, I created a consistent thread that runs through all brand touchpoints, reinforcing recognition and cohesion.
Design System
Logo & Variations
The logo was refined for clarity and legibility, with a full suite of responsive variations (primary, inverse, and monochrome) to ensure adaptability across all mediums.
Colour Palette
The colour system was designed to reflect both professionalism and vibrancy.
Green represents growth, education, and sustainability, while orange introduces energy and optimism. Neutral tones provide balance and versatility.
Typography
A clean, modern typeface was selected to enhance readability and create a contemporary, accessible feel across both print and digital platforms.
Graphic Language
Organic, flowing shapes derived from the logo symbol introduce movement and continuity. These elements visually communicate progress, unity, and forward thinking while strengthening brand consistency.
Application
The refreshed identity was rolled out across a wide range of touchpoints, including:
- Event branding and campaign visuals
- Environmental signage and large-format applications
- Corporate stationery and documentation
- Branded merchandise (apparel, lanyards, packaging, promotional items)
- Digital and social media assets
Each application was designed to ensure consistency while maintaining visual impact in real-world contexts.
Outcome
The result is a cohesive and versatile brand identity that strengthens the Royal Bafokeng Institute’s visual presence. The system enhances brand recognition, improves usability across platforms, and effectively communicates RBI’s mission of education, growth, and community empowerment.
